Leave the Back Door Open

Message on the wind, aimless wailing waif seeks passage like a songbird freed from her spindled, bony cage. Clipped wings would keep her;
flightless monument to joy.
Released though she shakes; stunted feathers flying free towards a golden sun

Daring          Light-haloed.

Sometimes too wind screams its secrets in swollen, funnelled rages crashing trees, smashing panes; disastrous rearranger requiring

Salvage        Reassembly.

Still i make it a habit to crack my window, leave the backdoor ajar, await
the cheek flutter stir with its birdsong whisper.

Or the screen door’s

BangBangBang!

cymbal smack, crack knocking family photos from frames; attention-seeking child!
so things need

Attending           Mending.

Still i await the trill fear of unexpected gusts.
Easy to lock things right tight; the way buildings are now.
Models of climate-controlled efficiency keep us in deficiency

Separate            Certain.

But may i wake always to the risk of open doors. Let the plastic bag whirl, swirl its dust-devil dance of white-flag surrender
drift in on distant storms.

May i sway to their melodies, let in their mystery. Wind's long arm conducting
her orchestra of creation through
the back door i’ve left open.
